About WHAT Radio

WHAT Radio is Stetson University's radio station, broadcasting online and on-the-air.

Founded in 1949 and rebranded in 1975, WHAT Radio has been at Stetson for some time. In 1949, Stetson University founded a radio station called WJBS (for John B. Stetson), where listeners could tune in to 1490 on the AM dial. The college later sold the AM station. In 1975, When Peter Brockway came to Stetson University, there was no radio station, so he decided to start WHAT Radio. Every radio station on the East Coast starts with a W, and Brockway’s brother came up with the idea using H-A-T for Hatter, and it stuck. Nowadays, with a full station on the second floor of the Carlton Union Building, WHAT Radio continues Brockway's legacy, keeping the mics hot and the speakers loud to empower students week after week.

WHAT Radio hosts podcasts, interviews, and in-station sessions, such as Glass Wall Sessions, which invite music artists to come in and perform at the station. WHAT Radio also co-hosts co-host Uncouth Hour, Stetson’s weekly open mic night, with Touchstone every Thursday at 9:30pm in Lee’s Garage at the Carlton Union Building. Most importantly, WHAT Radio serves as a resource for the Stetson University community to help provide, set up, and operate audio/visual equipment for their needs.
